New Icon Landcomm: The Icon Throne

- A rewrite of a script I've been working on, in some form or another, for ten years, called "Flesh and Blood." It was my primary script in grad school; my first year was the first draft, and then the second year, I did extensive workshops in two different classes. It went through about four various iterations in those two years. The protagonist went from being a mid-30s nurse to a late-20s cop. From 2007-2010 I went through a few drafts on my own, finally settling on the protagonist being a senior in high school. The central premise stayed the same, but the bulk of the story changed quite a bit. I didn't do anything with it from 2010-2015. Last year, the producer who optioned one of my other scripts gave "F&B" a read-through and liked it - modest budget, thrillers always sell - but felt it needed work. So I did another re-write, sticking with the high school millieu but shifting to a more psychological, kind of "Hannibal" (TV) vibe. My unofficial agent and manager (we're all working on developing stuff, but I haven't signed anything) were into it, but thought I'd gone too far in the psychological direction, needed to come back a bit and hit a few more of those thriller tropes. So I'm doing another draft, this one almost a full rewrite in the first half, with more of the pages from the previous draft sticking around for the second half. I'm shooting for getting through Act 2 at the least by the end of March, and I'm making really good time. At this point, I've been working on it for so long that doing different drafts and iterations is easy-peasy. I never feel like I'm killing any darlings because I've killed them all at one point or another.
- A new script idea, still in the outlining phase. I'm not usually an outliner for a first draft, preferring to find the plot and learn who the characters are as I go. What that means is that my first draft usually gets either tossed or extensively re-written. When I'm just writing on my own, it's no big deal; now that I'm working with others with development, there's more pressure to not waste time and energy. So I'm having a hard time going through a part of the process I usually never address until I've gone through the whole script - I sort of do the whole thing backwards. I'm watching movies for structure paradigms, but I need to get my ass in gear. I'm so much more interested right now in "F&B," it's hard to stop and work on something else. My goal was to have the outline done today; I'm just at the end of Act 1. So, this weekend, then!
- My novel, "The Orphan Queen." Always and forever. I'm at 400k words now, so obviously it would never be published as a single novel (not that I ever worry about publishing, to be honest; it's not why I'm writing it). But I know where the story ends, so I'm writing to that point, and I'll figure out the rest as I get there. I started it in the summer of 2012, so coming up on four years.
- Trying to complete old B5 WIPs. I'm almost done with the next chapter of Alma Mater, and I just started the next and hopefully last chapter of Cells (which as far as I can tell, exactly one person read chapter four, so this is clearly just for my benefit, haha). Over the past month or so I actually re-read all my own B5 fanfic (is that really self-indulgent?) and I just super-miss the fandom as it was here in 2010-2012, and I hate that everything's moved to tumblr because tumblr's a pain in the ass.

Oscars 2016
Feb. 28th, 2016 08:33 pmMAD MAX MAD MAX WIN ALL THEM TECHS GO GO GO!
I'm still hoping it wins at least one big above-the-line award, but I'll be happy if it sweeps the techs. (What if George Miller won, though? What if it won Best Picture, though?)
Kinda wanted Jennifer Jason Leigh to win just because she's great, but honestly I hadn't seen any of those movies so it was kind of hard to say.
ETA 1: EHHHH Lubezki won for Cinematography again. I was really hoping John Seale would win for Mad Max (duh). Not only was it an absolutely stunning, gorgeous film, but Seale was also the primary camera operator, which is just some baller shit, let me tell you. The Oscar for Cinematography covers pretty much everything that's the visual component of the film, and Mad Max also had the best color timing I've seen since LOTR. So, disappointing.
Here comes editing...better be Margaret...FUCK YEAH MARGARET SIXEL FUCK YEAH LADY EDITORS FUCK YEAH MAD MAX guys I'm so excited.
ETA 2: Y'all those montages for Sound Editing! That's what sound editing is! For everyone who has ever been like, hahaha what's sound editing what's the difference between sound editing and sound mixing yur yur lol I work in the film industry I don't even know haha THAT IS WHAT SOUND EDITING IS. So obviously I'm glad that one of the nominees that wasn't just Most Gunshots won. MAD MAX HOLLER.
MAD MAX SOUND MIXING tonight has been very shiny and chrome so far, I must say.
ETA 3: Aw, it's my perfect mocap pocket prince Andy Serkis, I love you sweet babby, some day they will properly appreciate your talent.
VFX like any of these movies could win...will it be Mad Max...I mean...it's my movie bae this year...waiting patiently...Ex Machina? Ehhhhhhhhhhh I roll my eyes at obvious "we liked this movie so we'll throw it a win" wins. Like it's fine I guess, but nowhere as impressive as literally any of the other nominees.
ETA 4: Oop we're at the boring part of the ceremony. No offense to these categories and the artists represented therein. But it is boring. I'm cross-stitching.
ETA 5: Holy shit Mark Rylance won Supporting Actor! Wow! That is a fucking shock! I for sure thought Stallone had that locked up. I haven't seen Bridge of Spies, and honestly don't really know Mark Rylance, but I'm so honestly chuffed to have an honest-to-God surprise for a change. With all the critics awards and precursors, there aren't that many surprises in the big categories anymore, so this was quite fun.
ETA 6: I can't watch the In Memoriam this year. I can't.
ETA 7: ENNIO MORRICONEEEEEEEEE. Bitch gets an honorary Oscar in 2006 because he's a bamf who's never won and they're like, he's old let's give him one, he'll die soon, and he's like FUCK Y'ALL I'LL WAIT TEN YEARS AND WIN ONE FOR RILL AND GIVE MY SPEECH IN ITALIAN AND IT'S GOING TO BE KILLER AND Y'ALL WILL HANG ON EVERY WORD AND THEN I SHALL ASCEND INTO THE HEAVENS ON A BEAM OF LIGHT I'M ENNIO MORRICONE ASSHOLES LISTEN UP.
ETA 8: *angrily weeping about Inarritu (I'm on my tablet so I can't do diacritics) winning Director damn it he won last year and like normally I would say whoever was the best should win regardless of other considerations but DAMN IT I WANTED GEORGE MILLER HE DESERVED IT INARRITU GOT IT LAST YEAR I'M NOT HAPPY ABOUT THIS* no it's okay it's okay I was prepared...I didn't...still...have hope...*weepily weeping*
ETA 9: Brie and Leo, no surprises there.
Best Picture...
...
Spotlight?

I mean, first of all, if a movie about child sex abuse in the Catholic church was gonna win Best Picture, why couldn't it have been Doubt? Second of all, eh. I'm sure it's good, but eh. Third of all...at least it wasn't The Revenant haha.
Goodnight, folks!
Talking about Fanfic
Feb. 24th, 2016 06:35 pmBasically I'm the worst fan.
It was kind of fun reading through some of my old fic, though. Every now and then I would be like, this isn't half bad! And it's nice to take a break from all my "real" writing on occasion. I don't know how many people are even still on LJ that are still actively in B5 thingies, but at a certain point you have to write for yourself anyway.

Babylon 5 Love Month etc.
Jan. 31st, 2016 11:01 amIt's Wednesday, so I need to...get started...on something...
Anyway, there are still lots of open days, so if you'd like to do even a little something, please head over to Babylon 5 Love Month and sign up! I'm publicly declaring now that I am going to write a new chapter on one of my WIPs. Probably for my second day later in the month.
(And since no one's yet signed up for tomorrow, I'm mayhap going to try to put together a l'il something.)
I definitely need to post about The X-Files (!!!) revival. I planned to last week, but we were swamped at work. I'm not sure this week is going to be any better, but once you reach a certain point of chaos, and it becomes the norm, you adjust. Life, uh, finds a way, as Dr. Malcolm would say, and life for me at work is having time to write and do random fandom shit.
Happy Fountain Pen Day!
Nov. 6th, 2015 12:44 pm
My collection! Actually, I'm missing one that I left at work. Most of these were in the $15-20 range, which maybe sounds expensive if you're used to buying ten ballpoint pens for two bucks, but they're definitely on the low end as far as fountain pens are concerned. I use different pens for different sorts of writings, depending on the nib size, what kind of paper I'm working on, what kind of ink I'm using, etc. As you can see in the lower-lefthand pic, fountain pen ink does this really cool thing called shading, where more ink gets laid down on certain parts of letters, so you get lighter and darker colors as you write. Not all ink shades, not all paper shades, but it's one of my favorite parts of the experience.

This is from a display I did at work (though my sister did the Edgar Allan Poe paper cut-out). I used my Pilot Parallel pen - it's the long skinny silver one with the orange cap, they run about ten bucks on Amazon. If you like calligraphy, I would definitely recommend the Parallel. I'm still learning how to best use it, but it was a lot easier writing this than times I'd done calligraphy back in school with a quote-unquote calligraphy pen.
(The ink blots you see here and there are me literally dropping ink on the paper with a syringe, the big ones to cover up mistakes HAHA.)
If you write by hand at all it's totally fun to have at least one or two fountain pens in your arsenal! They're not super expensive, there are a ton of resources online if you run into issues, you can use all sorts of fun and sparkly inks (like this!), and let's face it, they look pretty boss.
Two Months Away!
Oct. 20th, 2015 10:49 am...for a Sunday matinee.

But I'm still excited! I'm just too old for
I watched the trailer twice yesterday and that's probably it for me. Can't get spoiled, can't get used to the shiny, gotta stay hype.
(I don't have any Star Wars icons. I'll need to rectify this. And I've been meaning to make new icons for awhile anyway...)
And, of course, it's the fourth anniversary of the Parks and Rec episode where Tom and Donna remind us that it's the best day of the year...treat yourself! I'm going to pick up something for lunch instead of eating the dumb Lean Cuisine I brought. Treat yourself two thousand fifteen!
Saw this meme today in attempting to begin to catch up on my flist maybe just a little. I cheated a bit, in that I used the first two or three lines for a couple. Also, this represents the first lines of the last few chapters from my novel, as I haven't been writing much - if any - fanfic lately.
1. JENNY ADAIR (17) never stops moving with a boundless, jittery energy from room to room.
2. I believe we've been here in Transoceanus for four months now?
3. JOHAN (V.O.) Heinrich, tell me a story.
4. Perhaps it was only a coincidence, but Hermann didn't think so.
5. Calisia was a charming little town northeast of Omitaqua, built on bluffs overlooking the ocean.
6. A clearing in the woods. Green, birds singing, like a poem or some shit. Daryl made it no further, dropping to his knees.
7. Evenfall Hall, like any castle in the Seven Kingdoms, was filled with many particular odors.
8. It had been their last night together in the wild, though of course neither knew it at the time.
9. The walls were thicker at the bottom than at the top, like an old pane of glass.
10. Shouts at the end of the corridor. Shouts that were coming their way. Claudia slid her right hand up her left bracer, drawing out the dagger there, spinning it free of the linen.
As far as writing goes, for the last year I've been writing primarily on my novel The Orphan Queen, as well as two screenplays. Rewrites and edits on a screenplay I optioned last fall (my first option!), which is ostensibly being sent around to directors right now? I don't know; I haven't heard from the producer who optioned it in about two months. The other is a script that I started literally a decade ago, that the producer read and liked the concept of, but he had a lot of good notes and said that it felt a little dated. And it totally did; even though my last rewrite of that script had been 2010, it's amazing how much technology's changed and such. So I'm currently about two-thirds through a page-one rewrite of that one. I've been pretty consistently writing every single day, and it's become so much of a habit that I don't even really think about it anymore. It's like, what else would I be doing with my time? It would be cool if something happened with the first screenplay (The Dead House, which I think I wrote about on here once upon a time), but that's just a bonus, and not the reason why I sit down and write.
I'm still here!
Sep. 29th, 2015 02:26 pmSo, I got an email that my paid account was due to expire. I had two choices. Let it expire? But that seemed a tacit acknowledgment that I would never post again. So I had to renew, obviously. But once I paid for a blog that I hadn't used in a year (a year?!), I realized that I absolutely had to post again, today, immediately.
(I waited like six hours to make this post, obviously.)
Soooooooooo, it's been awhile! There are a multitude of reasons (three, maybe four) for why I quit posting for a year (A YEAR?!?), but I won't get into everything now. Mostly because it's boring and I doubt anyone cares. But I wanted to say hello! I'll be endeavoring to getting back into the swing of things and maybe making things and writing things again, and checking up on my flist, and other such online fandom thingies!
I feel like I should add something of substance to this post, however, so have literally the only thing I've done in Photoshop in the past year: a teeny-bop collage of silent film star Conrad Veidt! (My sister went through A Phase.)

Ugh! I hate Apple products!
Sep. 11th, 2014 09:01 amSoooo, if you haven't heard, they are discontinuing the iPod Classic. This is a disaster. I have a ton of music, and I want to put all my music on my device, because I may not know what I want to listen to on any given day. Some days it's classical - and some days it's a specific kind of classical. Or it might be soundtracks, or new music, or music from high school and college, or oldies, or classic rock, or WHO KNOWS. I NEED ALL THESE OPTIONS AVAILABLE AT ALL TIMES.
I also like not having to charge my device every day/every other day.
I also like just being able to use a scroll wheel, instead of having to actually look at my device, unlock a screen, go through apps and programs, etc.
I JUST WANT A REGULAR IPOD THAT JUST PLAYS MUSIC AND DOES NOTHING ELSE.
I mean, I have an iPod Classic, but it's about six years old, and who knows. Anything could happen. I could drop it tomorrow. It could freeze and I might not be able to reboot it. I could spill coffee on it. (That has the greatest likelihood.) The little port for the plug-in might get a little bent thing in it or something. ANYTHING COULD HAPPEN.
So I needed to buy another one. But it's not available to just buy online because reasons, and my local stores don't have any available, so I just bought one to pick up in-store at a Target like an hour away and it says my order went through but I will not believe it until I get my confirmation "your item is ready to pick up!" email and even then I will need to have it in my hands.
Just.
I hate you, Apple.
ETA: UGH I JUST GOT AN EMAIL THAT IT'S NOT AVAILABLE AT THAT LOCATION. CHANGING MY PICK-UP LOCATION. SO HELP ME GOD.
ETA 2: Okay it's available and ready for pick up at the other location, which is even farther away. Blessings on that Target's family, blessings on that Target's cow.
