School Work was canceled today and tomorrow, so things are pretty A-plus around here.  We got at least 10 inches of snow today, maybe a foot - we haven't officially measured yet.  And it's STILL coming down like crazy.  We've shoveled the driveway twice, the last time just an hour ago, and it looks like there's already a fresh inch out there.  We only live half a mile from Grandpa's house, so we tromped up the unplowed road to have dinner with him tonight and to watch the KU basketball game, then tromped back down.  Both times, someone was out with a dog who was so rapturously excited to come play with us in the snow.  I fell down shoveling Grandpa's back porch, and then almost wiped out twice on our return journey.  (At the beginning of this winter, I vowed it would be a No Fall Winter.  I've fallen three times.)

Today we watched a documentary about the Oscars, which was pretty enjoyable, some Nigella, and then the first episode of Beauty and the Beast with Linda Hamilton and Ron Perlman.  I vaguely remember watching it as a very wee child, and basically only remember how much I wanted Catherine and Vincent to kiss, so it was pretty fun to revisit that.  Tomorrow I plan to get more writing done - I did a smidgen today - and maybe try to catch up a little on my backlog of TV.

Day 2 - A show that needs more viewers

The Americans!  It's only got one season under its belt, but unlike a lot of first seasons, this was a show that knew what it was right out of the gate.  Two undercover Russian agents in Washington D.C. in the early 80s.  The Cold War, espionage, cons, costumes.  Fake mustaches.  And then there's like all this deep stuff about how it's like a ~cold war in their marriage.  Perms.  A really kicking soundtrack.  These people are really attractive, like for real.  And it just kept getting better and better, until the season finale, which was legit great television.  I am super-excited to see it come back, so now's the perfect time to do a quick 13-episode binge and get caught up - and help keep this awesome show on the air!

I like The Americans too, though not as rapturously as many fans on LJ seem to. It's fun to watch, I enjoy the characters, but I completely forget about it when I'm not actually staring at an episode. I almost never have shows I just watch and am not fannish about, so this is weird for me.

Heh, I know what you mean about not having shows to just watch and not be fannish about. I do genuinely really like this show, but I'm not like hunting down BTS stuff, or promos, or cast interviews, or even fanfic, like I normally would with a show I'm really into. But it's a good show that hasn't turned out a dud yet, so I'm into that.

Darn it that's two people whose opinions I trust who love The Americans. I'll have to find the thing, not on Netflix :(

Beauty and the Beast didn't age as well as I'd hoped but I still enjoyed my (partial) re-watch. Still haven't finished S2 because *sad*. Early GRRM. When I lived in NYC it was a fun thing to look for all the tunnel entrances in Central Park.

I think my sister said that FX is going to reair the first season before the new one starts. I'd say it's definitely worth at least checking out the pilot, if nothing else.

Yeah, I was surprised by how old the film stock looked on Beauty and the Beast. It looked more like a show from the early 70s than the late 80s just in the quality of the film. Makes me wonder how well it was stored before it got transferred to digital. My sister and I kinda laughed at how much Catherine's story in the pilot mirrored Linda Hamilton's journey as Sarah Connor in the first two Terminator movies; having a female lead on a show learn how to protect herself from the get-go scored a lot of points for me. (Even if Vincent will, I know, inevitably end up rescuing her a lot.)

I was surprised by how huggy and shippy they were in just the first episode! I kind of assumed it would take some time for that relationship to build up to that point, but no, full speed ahead.

BATB was meant to be an instant recognition soul-mate two halves of the same whole kind of thing, not a relationship persay. Shades of Grey is still one of my favorite episodes that is based on that idea. They just KNOW things about one another. It's not just Vincent's 'animal' senses; Catherine can always tell too.

I try to think of the film quality like sepia-toned photos, pictures from the past. Once upon a time.... The show meant a good deal to me when it aired so it has the aura of that meaning left. My favorite parts were always about the tunnels and the society they had built up there. The history and the natural beauty of the caves, the Hall of Whispers, the waterfall, Winterfest, the Helpers, the Borrowers aspect of their lives (they use what we throw away)--that is very NYC. I still have bits of furniture street-scavenged in NYC and Boston. And of course the books and the poetry and the music.

In some ways it hasn't aged well, but it has in my memory.

I think it stood out to me because no shows do that; it seems like just about everyone does that Sam-and-Diane will they-won't they thing if there's even a hint the relationship might be romantic in nature. Coming into it cold, because I basically remember zero from watching it as a kid, it just surprised me. Which is not necessarily a bad thing at all; just different.

Seriously. Though I do miss her hair. I know she straightens the crap out of it these days, and has for awhile, but a big curly mane would be so appropriate for the time period of this show.

I really don't know if I should watch it. I have it on my "to watch" list but the description doesn't sound like fun. More like something I have to concentrate for. And frankly I'm mostly not in the mood for too much drama.

Unless it contains zombies (The Walking Dead;)

Yeah, it may not be for you. It's pretty serious, there are a lot of plotlines that track over multiple episodes, and most of the characters are kinda grim. You could certainly check out the pilot, but I'd say if it doesn't grab you, the first season doesn't really veer away from the pilot in terms of tone or anything.

OMG I so want to watch The Americans! I managed to watch Hannibal, Banshee etc before their new seasons started to air and now it's time for this show!

Oh memoorieeesss about BaTB the original. Such a sweet, cuddly show. <3

Btw I don't know if you're watching teh CW version, but the hate it's getting from the fans is beyond ridiculous LOL. All because "the writers killed the main pairing of the show" XD

The great thing about catching up with so many of these shows is the short seasons these days. It's just 13 episodes! Totally doable in a week or two.

We're rewatching Hannibal right now before S2. Even better this time around, I swear.

I know of the CW version of Beauty and the Beast, but I haven't watched any of it. I actually haven't heard much of a response from people whether it's any good or not, so it wasn't even on my list or anything. I hate when fans get so vicious because their personal ships don't work out; I can't imagine that being the only reason I watched something, you know?

A friend of mine is watching BaTB for Sendhil Ramammurthy and she says it's horrible mainly because of the awful writing. XD There are similar comments on the net, but it's sad to see fan harassing the official Twitter accounts with their hatred just because the writers temporarily 'ruined' the main pairing of the show.

I just don't get this either. I watch shows hoping they would be entertaining and if I start to like a pairing along the way, that would be just a plus, nothing more.
