Had a blergh day.  Woke up blergh for no discernible reason.  Nothing specific (at least this morning); just feeling, as Kurt Hummel would say, full of ennui.  Worked.  Went to write and some douche in a beret and drinking espresso was sitting at My Table.  Came home to a letter from Austin Film Festival telling me Flesh and Blood didn't make it to the semifinals.  (No letter for Fall River, though; wouldn't they have mailed at the same time?)

In short, blergh.

I needed to find a way to make myself happy again!

Here's the thing with this episode: it's perfect.  And, you know, a lot of shows have done musical episodes or high concept episodes or Very Special Episodes, but few have worked as seamlessly as Buffy the Vampire Slayer's musical episode.  There was no laborious conceit to make it all work; obviously, at some point in Sunnydale's history, a demon would appear that would make everyone sing and dance.  It made perfect sense.

Besides that, the songs are fantastic.  The problem with a lot of other shows' musical episodes is that the original songs suck - which is why everyone has gone the Glee route and just used pre-existing songs.  But this show's songs are awesome and wonderful.  I may or may not sometimes sing along when I watch.  For those of you who haven't seen it, or for those of you who, like me, never pass up an opportunity to listen to the soundtrack, here's my favorite song:

This is also by far the prettiest episode of the show.

Another thing that made my day kind of blergh is that I spent, no lie, two frakking hours trying to finally learn how to make gifs.  I prevailed!  And so now I can bring you The Hottest Moment In Television History:

One of the things, for me, about watching this episode is that it's not just about watching the episode.  It makes me remember going to the official soundtrack release party at Tower Records on Sunset - I got my CD signed by Amber Benson, Michelle Trachtenberg, and Joss Whedon himself.  You know how when Moses comes down from talking to God, and his face is like blinding bright?  That's what my face was like walking out of the store.  I actually spoke to Joss Whedon.  I asked him questions and he answered me.  I think I probably looked like this for the next week.

Also, I miss two things about living in Austin.  One is going to school (because I miss being in school).  The other is the Drafthouse.  Besides its general awesomeness, the Drafthouse also did special shows, one of which was the Buffy Musical Sing-Along.  There is nothing like sitting in a theater with a couple hundred other Buffy fans, singing along with all the songs, screaming obscenities every time Dawn has a line of dialogue, waving your lighters, having a Buffy-themed alcoholic drink.  I miss the Drafthouse the way some people miss actual human friends of theirs.

In conclusion: I am now happy again. ♥

For some reason I could never get into Buffy. But I loved Angel. *shrug* I think it was the increase in what I will henceforth refer to as The Boreanaz Factor.

Buffy was a super inconsistent show. Angel was way, way better. No doubt. But I loved Spike like crazy, so there's a lot of Buffy the show that I still love like crazy, too.

It was amazing how much better Boreanaz got as an actor over the course of the two shows. Even now, I have a hard time watching Angel the character in the first few seasons of Buffy, because Boreanaz just is pretty dreadful all around. By the time he got his own show, he was so improved and so much more awesome and I just ended up loving him.

Agree this episode is basically perfect. Even my friend who was all hyped up for it, loved it (I was afraid she would be let down after all the build up to watching it).
I end up listening to this soundtrack so much anymore, because it's so wonderful. Also, LOVE that song you included, I think it's one of my favorites. (But I love them all!) *sings along*

Gorgeous picspam, and great gif - all your hard work paid off! (Gifs look like a ton of work to me.) I keep trying to pretend like I don't think Spike is really that hot, because it's such a cliche any more. But sadly, I can't help it, he's hot.

eta!! Nice Willow icon :D

Spike is massively hot. Those cheekbones! That accent! Rawr.

Heh, when I was in LA, my roommate and I went to Universal Studios Citywalk, and there was a big TV and movie merchandise store. And I bought a Spike magnet and calendar and glossy promo photo. The PAB working behind the counter was all, "Oho, do you like Spike or something?" And normally I would blow that kind of thing off and just be nice, but I growled back, "I LOVE SPIKE WHY DON'T YOU SHUT UP AND NOT MAKE FUN OF YOUR CUSTOMERS." Seriously, do not mess with Spike fangirls.

I think the only song I don't listen to that much is "Under Your Spell," which is kind of weird, because Amber's voice is so, so lovely - it's just not as good as the rest, it seems to me.

Sometimes I get Anya's "bunnies" solo stuck in my head for days.

Ugh, gifs are hard. I used this tutorial (http://community.livejournal.com/icon_tutorial/10834187.html) and it was like...a lot of steps. Especially since I ended up having to manually screencap the DVD because none of the FOUR SEPARATE PROGRAMS I downloaded would auto-cap a DVD.

(Hey I've been to Universal Studios Citywalk too!)

For me, I think part of the reason Tara's song isn't one of my favorite is mostly because it's sort of depressing when she realizes she actually is under Willow's spell. So I usually just for bad for her when she's singing because she doesn't know how true it is.
I also usually end up skipping Giles's song whenever I listen to the soundtrack, which is really weird because he's got such a great voice.

I'm gonna try to read that gif tutorial but it looks overwhelming. Thanks for the link.

That gif tutorial was overwhelming. That's why it took me like two hours to do it. (Well, that and dealing with trying to screencap a DVD - ugh, it's a nightmare. You have to just find an avi.) And usually after I go through a tutorial, I can remember all the steps next time. False. I had to go through it step by step again when I tried to make an animated icon (which was as failure). So, IDK.

Thank you. I will now have "they got the mustard out" running through my head for days. Funny story...I was listening to this soundtrack in my car one day many moons ago. My parents - who neither very much like TV or curse words - hop into my car, I turn it on, and the song you have included in this post comes on somewhere in the middle. To be exact, it came on to Spike singing, "I hope she fries, I'm free if that bitch dies." OMG. Hello parents. Welcome to my Buffy obsession.

Your GIF made my day. That is my favorite vampire in the entire universe. And his song in said musical, the part where he kind of hums...it does things to me.

Sorry to hear about the not-so-great day and about the Austin Film Festival. I'm glad "Once More, With Feeling" could save the day. And man, if a sing-along came anywhere near this town, I'd be there with bells on.

Ha! That's a great story. At least you weren't listening to Dr. Horrible or something. <--

One of my roommates when I was an undergrad was born-again; I say this without any specific malice toward born-agains. I grew up going to church, a lot of my friends go to church; I'm not anti-religion by any means. This roommate was kind of crazy, which colored everything in her life, including being born-again - it wasn't the other way around. ANYWAY, I remember not long after she moved in, she wandered into the front room of our apartment while I was watching Buffy. She kind of stood there for a minute or so, then tsked me and said, "I really wish you wouldn't watch shows like this in the apartment. I don't like demons or evil energy around me." And I was like...yeah. Sucks to be you. I swear, though, she managed to be smack dab in that apartment every single Tuesday so she could waltz back and forth in front of the TV, making snide comments and tsking and being a pain just in general.

I laugh about it now.

Isn't Spike wonderful? I was so excited when he ended up on the last season of Angel, I can't even.

OMG, your icon! Speaking of songs that get stuck in your head, any time I listen to the Dr. Horrible soundtrack, I hear Nathan Fillion FOR DAYS. Usually singing, "But home is where the heart is, so your real home's in your chest." That line is both hilarious and genius to me.

And I was like...yeah. Sucks to be you.

Yes, I know that a lot of born-agains, as you say, respond to TV with a lot of disdain. But my response is pretty much the same as yours. Sucks to be you missing out on crazy good stuff.

Although, I have to admit that I had a lot of disdain for Buffy when I first heard about it. But then I turned it on one day, and there was this bleached blonde vampire named Spike, and yeah...

I wish they'd do a sequel to Dr. Horrible. I want more!

Hee, I was disdainful of Buffy at first, too. Because I was 15 and at the height of my X-Files obsession, and any other genre show that received any positive attention drew my ire, because I perceived that as some kind of slight or something. (I was 15.) It wasn't until I went to college and needed something new to watch, and happened to turn it on one night, and there was Spike, as you say...

Also, I was excited because I just had Buffy songs in my head yesterday. It was a welcome break from having "I'm On A Boat" in my head (and...now it's back), which is what's been EATING MY MIND for about four days now.

Sexiest GIF ever. *slurp* Spike being hot is not a fangirly cliché, it's a fact of life. It's like gravity. It just is.

It happens to me sometimes that I'll sit with some friends or even in a meeting at work, and someone will say something like "I wonder why this is so" or "Why is X so weird?" and I say: "It could be bunnies." People stare at me like I'm mad, obviously, but not for long. They are used to me saying weird things, like "Bring that cheese to sickbay!" or "Eat any good books lately?"

The long-forgotten Fourth of Newton's Laws: Spike is hot.

Man, seriously though on the quotes. It's especially bad the more I'm around my sister; I think 40% of our vocabulary is TV and movie quotes at this point.

RE: Flesh and Blood, be proud of how far it did make it. It's an accomplishment that takes incredible talent. *hugs*

I miss watching Buffy, sometimes I get a yen and manage to catch a few re-runs. I wish I had more episodes on dvd. Anya's bunnies were an in-joke with a few of my friends for the longest time. lol.

Wonderful job on the icons and ZOMG that gif is gorgeous! :D

You got to meet Joss Whedon? and ask him questions? and He answered them! O.O Too cool, speechless awesomeness really. I think I would've froze up with a stupid smile plastered to my face. :P

Well, I'm still in the running in that one competition. At this point, though, it's not enough to just do well. I have to do well enough to get an agent. Sigh. Don't mind me! I'm still having a very small pity party. I'll be over it soon.

Yeah, I was very nervous to talk to Joss, but it was just one of those autograph tables like at a con, and you really only have thirty seconds or so, so I didn't get too flummoxed. It was still pretty amazing, though.
