I like how you manage to show John's (very reasonable) depression and also give the story a sense of movement.
This was so hard to write, you have no idea, so I'm very glad to hear it worked for you. I personally don't have a lot of experience with depression, and certainly none with tragedy, and I keep waiting for someone to call me out on it.
It may be wrong to find the last section hot, but I did.
