I swear, there are so many shows I feel like they just sit around in the writer's room figuring out ways to shoehorn in cool shit.
The X-Files did a 40s episode, too. And there were Nazis! What I love about the Fringe episode is in addition to private eyes and the noir feel, there were also robots, and it was a musical.
