The Mall was full to bursting, and it was difficult to believe that each tiny dot, each individual pixel, was a separate human being. It was a rainy day, but no one seemed to notice. There was a hum in the air, something electric, effervescent. It was optimism, and joy, and certitude, all mixed up together and made manifest. As the notes of the National Anthem filled the air, each as clear and crisp as a new spring sunrise, it was easy to believe that there would never be any speed bumps, or tangles, or times of ugliness. It was easy to believe that finally, a true national consensus would be reached, and there would be real unity going forward.
