NaWriSoMo and New October Media

I'm doing National Writing Something Month.  My goal is just to write something every day.  Not that I think anyone particularly cares, but I'm going to do brief posts every evening charting my progress, as a way to keep myself accountable.  I'm only counting original projects; no fanfic.

The Orphan Queen (novel): 20,054 words --> 20, 583 words --> daily total: 529 words
The Fall (tv pilot): 0 pages --> 6 pages --> daily total: 6 pages
The Burning Brand (screenplay): 11 pages --> 11 pages --> daily total: 0 pages
Untitled Zombie Screenplay: 0 pages --> 0 pages --> daily total: 0 pages

In the future, I'll just post the last two options for each.  So, 500 words and 6 pages on two projects is a pretty damned good start, I think!  (Especially since I did almost all of that at work.)

New August and September Media

I don't think I'm going to meet any of my goals this year, but that's okay. I don't think any of those goals are attainable if you're not in a position to have many hours of free time every day, and my free time has been much curtailed from recent years. (Honestly, the only thing I miss about subbing is having hours and hours to read or write or work on Latin while only occasionally handing the kids out some worksheet. Those were the days.)

This and that; new June media.

My sister and I bought hydration packs, and they are amazing.  How did I exist before I could wear a backpack filled with water?  I AM SRS.  HOW I EXIST.  I wore mine for the first time when I went on a walk/jog last night, and the difference it made was astounding.  I can never find a water bottle big enough to carry the amount of water I actually need if I'm going to do 3-5 miles, and rationing the water as I go just psychs me out, and I get thirstier and thirstier.  Being able to lug 2 liters on my back and not have to carry a bottle is just fantastic.  I LOVE IT SO MUCH.

Right now I'm waiting for the sun to go down so I can go for my walk/jog.  (I don't like to say "walk," because I do run quite a bit, but I'm not yet up to just running [fucking hills], so it feels like a lie if I say I'm going for a run.  Anyway.)  It's blasted hot.  Also, our air conditioner quit at work yesterday, and by the time I left at 5pm it was 80 degrees inside.  Such fun!  I hate summer, you guys.  I really, really do.

Book Meme and May New Media

I never finish old memes before I start new ones.  Expect three entries before I get bored and wander someplace else.  Grabbed this meme from [livejournal.com profile] sonneta.

01. A fictional character you identify with and why.

I was in high school the first time I read the Mars Trilogy, and the series impacted me in a lot of different ways - it made me think about history as something living, as culture and government and society as something we create while we live in it, about conservation and environmentalism and how those aren't always the same thing.  But one thing that immediately struck me the most, and has stayed with me the most over the years, is my huge and undying love for Sax Russell.  He's my favorite fictional character from any medium - books, TV, film - for a variety of reasons.  One big thing that I identify with him is the way he is a very logical, pragmatic person who is also very emotional, even if no one else realizes it.  I'd spent quite a few years by that point trying to make myself more popular, believing that I had to be Miss Bubbles and Butterflies and tamp down those parts of myself that were too cold or rational or unfeeling if people were going to like me.  I can't honestly say that I had some kind of eureka! moment after reading the books that made me decide to be myself, but this was definitely one of the steps along the way.

New November Media

If anyone's looking for a new show to watch, maybe over the holidays when things are on hiatus, I cannot recommend Raising Hope enough.  Last night I literally slapped my knee - slapped my knee! - I was laughing so hard, and when the episode was over I had a big grin on my face.  It is just too cute for words.

I may just squeak by on my new books goal, but barring a marathon I probably will just miss new TV; no chance in hell on movies, but I never get anywhere close.  Ah well - it's more about my love of lists and meta and being able to keep track of things than to actually try and meet these arbitrary goals.

New August and September Media

The last time I posted my new media lists was way back at the end of July, and I didn't really have that many readers of this LJ at that time.  So, basically, I've been keeping track of the new books I read, movies I see, and scripted TV I watch for three years now.  At first I started it because it was a really popular meme, but I've kept doing it for two reasons.  One: I like keeping track of things.  I like lists.  I don't know.  Two: It's really helpful to know where I am in both book series and TV shows, if I end up letting time pass.  So right now, there are two different series that I've wandered away from, and it's really easy to look back and say, which was the last book I read?  And just look it up, instead of going to the library and reading the back covers and trying to remember.  Same with TV.  Right now, I'm like, what the hell was the last episode of Dexter I watched?  Since it's been, oh, six months or so since I last watched an episode.

So I mostly just post these for my own benefit.  Feel under no obligation to read and/or comment.

July New Media

(This is my first time posting these lists to my LJ. I've been keeping track of new books, movies, and TV for three years now. For me, it's less about trying to reach a certain number of new scripted episodes or new books, and more that I like lists, and I like being able to know what the last episode of, say, Dexter that I watched was after I take a four month break.)
