WHAT THE FUCKING FUCK

What happened with the Oscar nominations?  I mean seriously, what happened?
  • Bigelow and Affleck both get snubbed in Direction.
  • I mean the Director lineup just in general.  Fuck David O'Russell.
  • Moonrise Kingdom doesn't get a Picture nomination.
  • No Looper in Screenplay.
  • No John Hawkes in Actor.
  • Where the actual fuck did Jacki Weaver come from?  I didn't really think Ann Dowd would get in, but no Ann Dowd and Jacki Weaver instead?
  • This isn't a surprise, because everyone knew Alan Arkin would get in, but he would have been the third most interesting supporting performance in Argo, under Bryan Cranston and John Goodman.
  • I literally cannot with Editing.
  • No Hobbit for Costume?  (But Mirror Mirror and Snow White and the Huntsman make it in.)  Or for Sound Editing?  Or Sound Mixing?  (Lincoln for Mixing?  Really?  Really.)  No nomination for "Song of the Lonely Mountain?"
  • And where are The Avengers' Sound nominations?  Oh right, there are none.
  • I literally cannot with Documentary Feature, but I knew that when the first short-list was announced.
  • Hitchcock for Makeup over Lincoln?  Anthony Hopkins literally looked like he was melting.
  • I fundamentally do not understand Life of Pi getting nominated for Production Design.
Bright spots:
  • Christoph Waltz.
I have seriously like been seething this whole morning.  These are the worst.  THE WORST.

In conclusion, GPOY:

So glad I stopped caring about the Oscars when I stopped being able to stay awake to watch them over here. Like, I can stay up for a lot of other things, but the Oscars immediately put me to sleep now. And since award shows on principle ignore my favourite genre, ehhhhh.

♥ Have a cheer-up hug!

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 09:25 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I've been Oscarwatching for like fifteen years now, and while every year there are some disappointments, this is the first year where I was just like THIS IS BALLS, THIS IS LIKE GRAMMY-LEVEL NONSENSE. I'll still watch, but the most deserving people don't even have a shot now, and that's just weird. But yeah, it's like all the years I watched the Emmys when Battlestar Galactica wasn't even nominated. Like, whatever, most of these are technically invalid, Mary McDonnell for everything, etc.

♥ Yay for hugs! (Also, I'm going to try and comment on your post again, but it kept timing out on me earlier. Stupid LJ.)

Yup, right there with you. It's a pain in the ass to watch over here anyway because it starts at like, one in the morning and goes on to 6am (and always on a Sunday/Monday night, hahahahahah the number of times I went to school on zero minutes of sleep is really not funny I don't know why I'm laughing). And when it's mostly just disappointments, the effort is just not worth it. But then, I also don't really keep up with new releases anymore. I've found my little spot where 90% of TV shows I watch are older than I am, and the only films I watch are those that people I already love are in or that bf throws at me, lol. I used to be great at keeping up with new stuff. No idea what changed, really.

Like, whatever, most of these are technically invalid, Mary McDonnell for everything, etc.
AMEN.

(Urgh, shakes fist at LJ. It's been doing that to me so often lately. I think I've figured out how to give you access to my dreamwidth account, though, so if you want, I can do that and then you should be able to see my entries there with your LJ account? I don't know how exactly it works, it's that whole Open ID thing, but I know other people have done it.)

Man, one of the few things I miss about LA was watching the Oscars live. They started at 5pm, were over by 9pm, it was beautiful. Though this year I'm working the evening shift on Mondays so I won't go in till 12:30, so that will work out nicely.

Yeah, I've actually seen soooooo few of what's nominated. Like, I've seen Argo. Annnnnnd that's it. But that doesn't keep me from having very strong opinions about everything.

(I plan to see Les Mis this week or next because I have a pass, and Django for sure, and maybe Lincoln as well. Too much happens in December, sigh, and also I saw The Hobbit three times.)

That sounds nice! It's always gonna be weird to me that you guys are one country but have like, a million different time zones. /European

Psh, you can have Very Strong Opinions about everything even without having seen it. I don't think I've seen any of the Oscar things. I'm not intersted in Django because I don't like Tarantino (ducks flying tomatoes), and Les Mis-type things are not my cup of tea in general, and the rest I haven't even heard of, hah. ... /European ?

BB!DELENN! SO ADORABLEEEEE!

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 04:11 pm (UTC)(link)
The /European tags are killing me.

My first semester in school - where I was two hours behind - my mom could not remember the time zone difference. So she would call me when she'd been up for an hour or two and thought it was plenty late enough - but it was still like 5:30 or 6:00 am for me. Finally she figured it out, thank goodness, but I could have hopped on a plane and throttled her a couple times.

I try.

Hahahahaha, oh my god. That's hilarious. My mother does that to me, too, except we're in the same timezone... But I'm glad yours figured it out eventually.

[identity profile] dref22.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 08:54 pm (UTC)(link)
My two cents: Denzel Washington totally deserved a nomination IMO. I'd have been very pissed (not that I REALLY care about Oscars and any awards shows in the recent years lol wake me when Jack Coleman gets nominated) if he wasn't nominated.

And the other thing: I really want to see "Silver Linings Playbook" and I see that De Niro and Bradley Cooper earned nominations for it.

Affleck snub is CRAZY. That is all.

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 09:30 pm (UTC)(link)
I haven't seen Flight, but I heard that it was good, and that Denzel was good. My line-up for actor was Day-Lewis, Washington, Hawkes, Jack Black, and Joaquin Phoenix - so I was 3/5. But I'm just stunned that John Hawkes didn't make it in.

See, I did want to see SLP, but now it's become that movie that I just sort of irrationally dislike, heh. There's one every year, and I can't explain it. I do love De Niro, though. I have a feeling Alan Arkin's got this in the bag, but I can see De Niro sneaking in.

LOL I know the feeling, I have movies like that LOL. And even actors. XD

I can't believe I haven't watched The Master yet!

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 11:39 pm (UTC)(link)
Me neither! I was going to see it opening weekend because a local theater was showing it in 35mm, but then no one would go with me and I was in A Mood and didn't want to go alone. So I didn't. I'll catch it when it's on Netflix, though.

[identity profile] la-loony.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
I love Christoph Waltz, but I do feel sorry for Leo every year he gets nothing.

Haven't seen the whole list now that I see the points you bring up. Kind of glad I did, my day was not the best and this would've killed it.
I was sure I'd see Hobbit snagging all the things LotR used to snag.

Will watch the show though. Want to see how Seth does as host. Just have to get into as many of the movies nominated as I can before end of February.

[identity profile] la-loony.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
And because I read defs comment just now and your response, for some reason 'Les Miserable' is the movie I just irrationally dislike. Idk but the way Anne was buzzing for that nom rubbed me the wrong way.

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 11:42 pm (UTC)(link)
I still want to see Les Mis, but OMG I am sick of Anne Hathaway. I've never really cared for her, and her campaign when she was nominated for Rachel Getting Married was annoying, too - though not as annoying as this year. She's been insufferable with the "oh I had to starve myself" and "I'm just not that good" and "Tom thought I had it after four takes but I made everyone watch me do the song for eight hours."

Go Sally Field! Choose Sally Field!

[identity profile] la-loony.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 08:34 am (UTC)(link)
I usually like her but I'm disliking her a lot right now. I didn't get much of the Rachel Getting Married campaign so I can't compare, but I think with the TDKR boost she had in summer this campaign just had to be bigger and more annoying. Maybe she has no campaigning talent and should just do normal movie promo. I actually like it way more when people who don't campaign much/at all get the price.

I haven't even seen Lincoln and I want her to winXD

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-10 11:41 pm (UTC)(link)
I do feel bad for Leo, too. I don't really get it. He's not my favorite actor or anything, but he does turn in good, solid performances. I still can't quite figure out how he didn't get nominated for The Aviator.

I resigned myself when the reviews first started coming in that The Hobbit was not going to get the major noms. I don't know why? But it's like everyone agreed to just hate it this year - even though audiences love it. I think it's the 48 FPS thing, and the fact they're making three instead of two. People got butthurt over it before they even saw it, and let it influence their opinions. I just don't understand how Avatar - which was pretty, yes, but not actually good - gets a nomination and is actually one of the frontrunners, but The Hobbit gets nothing.

[identity profile] la-loony.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 08:29 am (UTC)(link)
I agree. I'm not running into his movies but when I catch them I know he'll do a good job.

All of what you said basically. Everytime I read stuff from people complaining about division into 3 parts I want to scream, because hardly anyone bothers to really get why it will be three parts. They just say 'It was such a small book it's not possible to make three movies' and that's it. I don't get the complaints about the 48 FPS, because from what I gathered you don't have to see it that way. I even saw the movie in plain 2D because I'm not much into 3D.
Looking back I'm sure Avatar just got noms because it was so special at the time, I believe it wouldn't get such a buzz if it would come out now.

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 04:15 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, the complaints that The Hobbit is a small kids book just proves to me that these people haven't actually read TH in a long time. Yes, it's short, but huge things happen that Tolkien basically just skims by - like the rock giants fight, which was such a cool thing to see up on the screen. There was one review everyone was tearing apart because he whined about all the extra stuff PJ had added in, including Rivendell. He just wanted to stick elves in there! It was just a ploy! And like...duh? They go to Rivendell in the book? Why else do you think Bilbo goes back there in LOTR? So I've just been like "I cannot" over all of it.

I had never seen a movie in 3D before, but we did go for the third time to see it in 3D 48FPS - and it was pretty cool! It took about ten minutes to get used to it, but it did look really pretty. It was not as weird as everyone was saying - just very real, like it was right in front of you. And I don't get the reports that people were throwing up AT ALL. I always have a hard time with movies with a lot of action - I get headaches - and I was completely fine with this. So I would totally recommend it.

[identity profile] la-loony.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 10:05 pm (UTC)(link)
I recently read somewhere that some scenes were dragged out...like the dwarves singing at Bilbos place and the Bilbo/Gollum riddle scene...I had no words on how ignorant that person was.

I have to get into a bunch of other movies firstxD Quite a lot of the nominated movies are just coming out over here so I have a chance to see as many as I can and have a better idea who deserves the award and who doesn'tXD

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-12 03:29 am (UTC)(link)
How could anyone think the Riddles in the Dark scene was too long?!?!!

[identity profile] la-loony.livejournal.com 2013-01-12 12:27 pm (UTC)(link)
People who don't know a thing about the original story I guess. I'm not sure if it was a journalist, but if so I hope he got in trouble for that just because it's so lazy to not even read up a bit about the material the movie is based on.

Btw LOVE your header .)

Seriously, I cannot believe the Avengers and the Hobbit got so little love. (Or rather, I can, but it pisses me off.)

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 04:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Hee! Yeah, I don't get it. They expanded the BP category so that one really good blockbuster a year could still get a nomination...and then they never nominate. I thought maybe one or the other would sneak in, but no.

No John Hawkes is.....I can't even.

Oh and The Avengers and The Hobbit are "niche" movies you know. ;)

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 04:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, no one goes and sees those silly fantasy movies! Those are for kids!

The good thing is, I know John Hawkes will continue to do really good work, so I can hope he'll get rewarded some day.

[identity profile] cath822.livejournal.com 2013-01-11 10:16 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm with you on this. John Hawkes and Leo were awesome, Moonrise Kingdom and Looper were robbed, and the Director lineup was all sorts of wack. I don't tend to pay attention to things like visual effects and production design, because I have a hard time distinguishing them from each other. But you know about such things, so I'll validate your outrage. :)

If it makes you feel better, after years of you recommending it, I'm finally going to the Austin Drafthouse next weekend! I want to see one of the special events, but our plans are kind of up in the air, so we might just see Zero Dark Thirty. Still!

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 02:02 am (UTC)(link)
The Drafthouse, yay! Where are you guys gonna be? We actually went to the Drafthouse today to see Django Unchained - I had a Royale with Cheese and a Chocolate Espresso milkshake. Eight hours later, I'm still stuffed.

Yeah, I kinda want to do the Back to the Future marathon, but I'll have to see (a) how much tickets are and (b) if anyone will go with me.

[identity profile] cath822.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 07:04 am (UTC)(link)
We're staying in downtown Austin, a few blocks from the Ritz Drafthouse next weekend. There are a few things going on, but nothing that really interests me. There's a live event with Joel Hodgson on Friday, but it's sold out. Oh, well. I pretty much just want the movie experience.

[identity profile] cath822.livejournal.com 2013-01-13 06:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Oh, and I was going to ask - do you have any recommendations for fun places to eat/go/see?

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-14 09:42 pm (UTC)(link)
There's a couple good pubs. Opal Divine's on 6th street, between Lavaca and Lamar, has a really nice ambiance; that's where we usually went out for drinks. Just a little further on down the road is the big Whole Foods that's like the biggest one in the country or something? I like to stop there because they usually have a great selection on the big blocks of chocolate, hee. And across the street from Opal's is Wahoo Fish Tacos. Good and cheap! And that whole area along 6th street is pretty great - lots of little bars and restaurants, shops, tons of live music.

There's also The Dog and Duck, on Guadalupe and 17th, just south of the UT campus. Best fish and chips ever. I don't know if you guys are renting a car or not; that's a bit of a hike from downtown. But if you do have a car, there's also The Noble Pig up north of Austin in Red Rock - great sandwiches.

I wish I had more recs for things to do, but we basically just ate, drank, and went to the Drafthouse.

[identity profile] cath822.livejournal.com 2013-01-14 10:17 pm (UTC)(link)
Ha; one of my colleagues who went to UT was raving about the milkshakes in Austin, especially the ones from P. Terry's. Eh, I don't mind paying five dollars. It will give it that Tarantino vibe, like driving down Congress Ave.

Yay! Thanks! I now officially have way more recommendations than time (we'll just be there Fri night-Sun afternoon), but at least we have choices. I feel like most things that we do are going to involve eating or drinking.

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-14 11:08 pm (UTC)(link)
P. Terry's! That's on South Lamar. Lots of stuff up and down Lamar. P. Terry's does have really good milkshakes, and like REALLY cheap burgers.

And also, if you head just south of where you are on Congress, there are a ton of cool antique-y shops and like a whole empty lot filled with food trucks. South, over the river, down to the 1200-1400 block.

Hopefully it'll be nice and cool when you're down there - we lucked out the first two days of our trip, it was in the 70s, but the last three days it was back in the 80s and lower 90s. End of October, sigh.

[identity profile] kungfuwaynewho.livejournal.com 2013-01-14 09:43 pm (UTC)(link)
I know you're going to think five dollars is a lot for a milkshake, but they are really good milkshakes. Just FYI. Chocolate espresso is my go-to.
