Hee, I was thinking about doing one, actually. I may, if I have time. You've got me all bungled on casting Lee as a woman now though, because I suddenly LOVE the idea, but then things get complicated with Starbuck. Because as it stands, one of the best things about Starbuck is that she defies stereotypes, whereas if she's this butch kickass girl who is also... a lesbian... then all of a sudden she's falling into stereotypes again. So IDK. But yes, I've been casting in my head all day. (IT'S SO HARD THOUGH. THE ORIGINAL CAST IS SO PERFECT.)
Hmm, that's true. You know, even when putting this together I didn't even think of it as "oh well now I've made Lee/Kara into a lesbian thing." I guess I never even saw Kara as being particularly straight? She's one of the few characters who strikes me as the kind of person who would totally just fall in love with whomever she happened to fall in love with regardless of gender - we just happened to see that her three canonical relationship were with men. (I say "one of the few characters" because most TV characters are just default straight in characterization BESIDES that they have straight relationships; I don't necessarily feel the same way with Kara. If that makes sense.)
I think there is a stereotype of butch kickass woman being into girls - but it's a male fantasy stereotype. They want to see that girl - who must be stereotypically attractive, don't forget - make out with another girl. Having her have an actual difficult, complicated relationship? I don't think is as much a stereotype. We see the ratings sweep month lesbian kiss, sure, but do we ever actually see relationships?
I love whargarbling on gender representations on TV. Thank you. :D
