Daily Drabble Day #10
Word reached her that Morden had been released. Yet Delenn still felt a terrible, gnawing anxiety that kept her restless, turned her stomach. By the time she decided that the only thing that would make her feel any better was to see John, it was far too late to walk through the station, to bother him in his quarters. She went anyway.
He didn't come to the door, and she walked into a room that was nearly dark. Most of his face was cast into shadow, and just noticing it and thinking of it in those words made a shiver run up her spine.
"Are you all right?" she asked, keeping her voice low. She had not even thought of an excuse, because anything she might have come up with would have been a lie.
"Just thinking about Churchill," he answered cryptically. On another day Delenn might have asked him to explain - any opportunity to learn more about Humans was always welcome - but she couldn't seem to find the words, and oddly enough, didn't even really care. That knot in her stomach was only growing, now so painful that she feared she might be sick. John must have seen it in her face. "What?" It didn't sound like a friendly question, or that he was at all concerned with the answer.
"I'm sorry," she murmured. "I shouldn't have come." And she turned to go. Before she could make it to the door, however, he stood and came toward her. Delenn felt a sudden rush of an almost primal fear. Surely there wasn't any part of her afraid of John? But his face was still shadowed, and she didn't know what he was thinking at all.
"Why did you come then?" If she were not mistaken, there was a veiled threat in that question.
Delenn realized, then, that she simply had to tell the truth. No obfuscations, no careful shading and just the right words. "Because I needed to see you," she said. She was clasping her hands together so hard she was afraid the bones might break. "Because I know that you were hurt today, and I know I contributed to that, and..." Delenn bit her lower lip, determined to keep her voice even. "And I'm sorry."
For a moment he said nothing. He didn't move at all. Delenn might have thought he hadn't heard her. She nodded briefly, bowing her head, and turned again for the door. John stepped forward and put his arms around her, pulling her into an embrace. Delenn was so surprised that she simply allowed it, and by the time she had her wits about her there was no possibility of escape.
She relaxed against him, the knot slowly melting. She let her arms slip around to his back, holding him as he was holding her. She shivered again, in pleasure this time, as his fingers moved through her hair. She felt herself breathe for what felt like the first time in hours, or even days. She knew that, at this exact moment, they were right where the universe wanted them.
