The book was very good! Technically the movie wasn't actually based on the book, but they're both about the same event.
One thing that I think the book captures that the movie doesn't - and I don't blame it, it's hard to put into a 2-hour movie - is how confusing the whole situation was. They didn't know where people were, one person thought they saw Person A but it was really Person B, and so on. It was months before they figured out exactly what happened.
I think what got me more than the cold was how high they were - clear up where jets fly! Like, I can't imagine trying to do anything in air that thin. Crazy. I like hiking, but that's just too much.
