Happy...new year?  It doesn't really feel like we're getting a fresh start, does it?

Last year, my one main resolution was to start journaling every single day, in a paper journal, writing with a pen.  I have never EVER before IN MY LIFE successfully done a resolution, but goddamnit, I journaled every single day last year.  I went downstairs to my writing desk, I turned on my lamp, and I wrote a journal entry.  Some were quite short - a paragraph, a dry recitation of the events of the day; some were longer - more introspective, putting grievances and worries into context.

Having a successful resolution under my belt, I've decided to do another one.  I've posted on here several times, over several years, how much I miss being part of fandom, and having more regular interactions with everyone.  I joined an icon community, I don't know, around six months ago, and have participated in fits and starts, but it never really felt like a group thing like some of my other landcomms in the past have.  To try something, to jump-start being active and online more, and because I miss writing fanfic full stop, I'm going to try to post at least a drabble a day for the whole of January.  If anyone has any prompts or requests, feel free to throw them at me; no guarantees, though.

I thought it had only been a week or so since I posted last - time does fly.  I've actually been fairly productive this month.  I finally started a new screenplay, having not worked on anything screenplay-related since last June.  I started relearning a bit of French through Duolingo, which has been a fun little diversion thus far.  We'll see how long I stick with it once it gets actually tough.  (I was violently reminded of how finicky French is with articles, though, ugh.  After having not worrying about articles at all doing Latin all these years, it was a jolt.)

I need to get back working on The Orphan Queen.  I go through fallow periods with it, but even when I'm not actively writing, I am usually thinking about it.  I have a very clear sense of so much of what is to come, and I think one of the reasons I take breaks now and then is because I know how long it will take me to write all I have planned.  I think I end up feeling discouraged not at the amount of work, but that I can't just download the novel out of my brain.  I always worry that I'm going to lose something in the process - which is silly, because nine times out of ten I end up writing something I didn't expect, or dramatizing something in a different way than planned, and it's far better than what I had tumbling about in my head prior.

Day 5 - Least Favorite Episode of Favorite Show

Again, I'm picking a favorite show, not necessarily my single favorite show - mostly because I don't think I could pick just one.  The truth is, I don't tend to dwell on bad episodes.  I watch them, shudder, erase them from my personal canon, and never watch them again.  In this case, I can't even remember much of the episode, the plot details, character decisions, anything, really, so it's hard to actually justify, other than that I know I was tempted to turn the TV off halfway through, and I never do that.

Battlestar Galactica - 3x14 - "The Woman King"

I know it had something to do with some crazy doctor where the refugees were living on Galactica, and that the whole episode was rewritten at the last minute because they ended up cutting a long-running subplot, and that Helo is basically The Best and Greatest Character of Our Times throughout, and by the time the episode was over I hated him.  And that's pretty much all I remember!  But I know it was awful.

I've been coming home the last few days and watching a random episode of Battlestar Galactica.  Out of all the shows I've ever loved, it's strange that it has become my comfort show - especially since the episodes I generally like to watch are the darkest and what you would think to be the least comforting.  I'm sure there's some kind of psychological who-zit thingy that explains it or whatever.  Last night I watched "The Oath," which is just perfect.  It really is.  It made me think that maybe the goal of any show is to reach a point where you can have an episode like that, so dense, every single character playing their parts, even the tiny supporting and recurring characters.  Where even the setting becomes a character, integral to the plot and the mood.

And I was thinking about how that episode wouldn't work if, in some way, Gaeta wasn't absolutely right.

As much as I've enjoyed Fringe (though not so much last season), and shows like Community and Parks and Rec (though sitcoms aren't quite the same for me), I haven't loved a currently-airing show since BSG the way I still love BSG.  I miss it.

Whew, I made it through the month of May.  That was the fifth May since I started doing the annual screenplay contest/festival extravaganza, and I think it may have been the most work and the most stressful.  (The very first May, my last semester in grad school, may still take the cake, though, since I was doing all of that on top of my master's thesis.  That was right before most contests switched to online entries, and I will never forget finding out the post office closed at 4:30 instead of 5:00 like I thought, and having to literally sprint across campus to get my script postmarked on time.  And since it was May in Austin, it was totally like four thousand degrees that afternoon, too.)  I continued to do revisions after getting the thing done at the beginning of the month.  Then finally got my ass in gear to do the revisions on my TV pilot, which ended up entailing a lot more work and rewriting than I had originally guessed.

So I finished all of that Tuesday the 29th.  The last major deadline was June the 1st.  Instead of just submitting and being done with it, I decided that since I had three days, that was totally enough time to bang out a Game of Thrones spec script.  (It wasn't.)  (I did it anyway.)  Then I got to work the kick-off summer reading weekend immediately following, and got a new project on my second job, and, and, and.  Well.  Let's just say that I'm still really fucking tired, pals.

I'm finding myself still sort of not feeling the whole internet thing right now, though.  Not sure why.  I think some of it is that I've come to associate the internet with feelings of guilt over not writing and being productive; I'm sure that will sort itself out soon.

Um.  This post is really boring.  Have some icons!

ETA: I did have the trailer here, but NBC already yanked it.  Because those are the command decisions networks make!  "Hey dude, let's make a teaser trailer to promote our new show."  "On it, bro."  "That looks great!"  "Oh no, people are watching it on the internet."  "Well take it down, obvs, we don't want anyone to watch it."

Sigh.  I'm sure it's already been reuploaded, so just try searching for it.

[livejournal.com profile] ufgator1977 posted this earlier today - I hadn't seen it yet.  I am very conflicted.  On the one hand, this looks amazing and very cool and look at all the spaceships and Cylons and yay!

On the other hand, I still blame this show for the cancellation of Caprica.  And to me, you can see that network decision-making process explicit in this trailer.  Caprica failed not because the network jerked it around, put it on a long hiatus, changed the premiere date with little advance notice, etc., but because it had girrrrrls in it!  Yuck!  And people were talking all the time.  About stuff!  But Blood and Chrome is going to succeed because it's about boys!  Who fight!  And shoot things!  And blow them up!  Pew-pew, ba-dow ba-dow!

And then I watch the trailer again.  Because it's cool.  (And why will no one let themselves understand that girls like shit blowing up, too?)  And then I remember my poor dear Caprica, whose last chunk of episodes I still haven't watched because I was so bummed by the cancellation that I couldn't bring myself to do it.  And this way, I still have new Caprica to (someday) watch.

But I miss BSG and this is kinda like new BSG.

Finally, I snagged this WIP meme from [livejournal.com profile] hearts_bloodPost the first sentence (or several) from every WIP you're currently working on, even if it's very short. Then invite people to ask questions about your WIPs.  With any luck, you'll get talking about writing, and the motivation to take that WIP one step closer to completion will appear as if by magic!

Herein are twenty 100-110 word drabbles for [livejournal.com profile] fandomverse!  Cut tags on sections that short don't really work, and I don't really feel like frakking with twenty cut tags anyway, so the following fandoms are represented:

Farscape, The Lord of the Rings, Fringe, Babylon 5, Inglourious Basterds, A Song of Ice and Fire, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, Rome, Miranda, Jane Eyre, The Walking Dead, Community, Parks and Recreation, Firefly, and Battlestar Galactica.

I made this for [livejournal.com profile] fandomverse's crossover video challenge.  I think Starbuck and Olivia are surprisingly similar characters, when you get right down to it.

This is for [livejournal.com profile] tvrealm's crossover challenge.  I'm presenting this as a completed one-off; I have a few more chapters written, but I'm not exactly sure where I'm going next, to the extent that I'm not sure if I'll end up finishing.  I think this works as a stand-alone, though.

Title: Doors
Specs: Battlestar Galactica/Babylon 5, 2400 words
